*SPOILER ALERT*
So--- I realize in all my griping about writing about what I was actually supposed to write which were very numerous (once)
I never actually explained my book. Or gave a summary. Or ANYTHING. Sooooo yeah here it is my synopsis. (And yeah they call me the queen of big words. Actually they don't. but they do call DD that so....)
HERE I AM NOT PROCRASTINATING!!! I AM JUST GOING TO FIND MY (@*#$(*% BOOK AND STARTING WRITING ABOUT IT. OK. Yeah. So. Here. It. Is.
Summer of My German Soldier- Bette Greene
Cast of Characters:
Girl (protagonist): Patty
Nazi: Anton
Dad
Mom
Patty's Sister: Sharon
Housekeeper: Ruth
Reporter: Charlene
(clearly their are more characters but they aren't that important to the flow of the story)
Patty is the main character. She is twelve. She is also Jewish. She has virtually no friends except her housekeeper Ruth. Her mother is a not a very loving person and is very bitter, and her dad beats her at the smallest provocation. Her little sister of course is perfect in every way and of course her parents adore her. One day Patty meets a German prisoner Anton. He escapes prison and she helps hide him. They are great friend and then they fall in love. Anton then runs away is shot and killed. Patty confesses to hiding him in her basement and is sent to a reform school (aka torture chamber from hell that isn't even Jewish) because her parents don't want her and she is to young to be sent to jail. And the book ends there. Now isn't that happy?
Forgot to add one thing: Charlene is a reporter who at first we dont like because she is really nosy but at the end we DO like because she sends Patty a letter of support when the ENTIRE country hates her guts (and her parents want to give her up for adoption or send her away permanently).
ReplyDeleteWow, that sounds upsetting, but seems like there are some sweet parts in it (sweet as in kind). IS the story based in WW2? Or is it more of a currently placed book?
ReplyDeleteIt takes place during WW2... when the allies (us) are winning and they're capturing Nazis and bringing them here. It's a pretty old book it was written about 40 yrs ago. It was on my book list :-P
ReplyDeleteSo I still don't know after that whole synopsis: what did you actually think of the book? Did you like it? Love it? Hate it? Find it as confunding as noses?
ReplyDeleteI did love it as a book because the story was (big word) enthralling and well written with a good plot.... but I really hated what happened. I mean I wish her dad didn't beat her and i wish her friend hadn't died, but I guess if they hadn't it wouldn't have been such an intense book. Know that I mean? It was a great book but I really hated like how her life was. But I didn't hate the plot.
